How to complete a ski outfit? Where to start?

In skiing, in addition to equipment suited to your skills, the right ski outfit is also very important. The weather on the slopes can change dynamically, so it is very important to be prepared for any conditions and to choose clothing that allows you to regulate your body temperature. This is why we should dress in layers, or more precisely three layers.

First is the base layer, or thermal underwear, which wicks away moisture and supports thermoregulation. The next layer is a warming layer, which provides thermal insulation. The whole is completed by an outer protective layer - a jacket with a membrane that effectively protects against snow and wind. This combination allows you to enjoy skiing in comfort, regardless of the weather conditions.

What to look for when choosing ski clothing?

When putting together a ski outfit, it is important to consider the waterproofness and breathability of the clothes. Skiing is a physically demanding sport, which is why the outfit should meet all requirements - protect against both chilling and overheating. Jackets and trousers made from membrane materials are indispensable - they guarantee protection from moisture and keep you dry even during long hours of activity on the slopes. In difficult weather conditions, effective protection against snow and wind is particularly important, which translates into thermal comfort. Good quality materials and workmanship are an investment that lasts for years - good quality garments will last for many seasons. It is worth remembering that a cotton T-shirt will not work under a jacket. Instead, choose moisture-wicking clothing that can withstand intensive exercise. The changeable weather on the slopes means that every layer of clothing must be carefully selected to ensure that you are completely comfortable when skiing, which is why we have put together a little compendium of ski clothing for you.

The first layer - thermal underwear for skiing

You should wear a first layer under your ski suit, i.e. thermal underwear. It is nothing more than a T-shirt and leggings made from functional materials. It has a double function. It prevents the body from cooling down and wicks moisture accumulated during exercise to the outside. Thanks to special materials, it keeps perspiration away from the body, maintaining thermal balance. You will find underwear made from a variety of materials - both synthetic and natural, such as merino wool. How do I choose my thermo-active underwear? So that it fits tightly to your body. Ideally, it should also have no stitching or flatlock seams. This will prevent uncomfortable chafing. It is only in this way that it fulfils its purpose. Remember not to wear a cotton T-shirt under your underwear.

S'portofino offers thermo-active underwear from reliable brands such as X-Bionic, Falke and Icebreaker.

A second layer of clothing for skiing - a warming jacket or sweatshirt

Well. The first layer is behind us. We've chosen our thermal underwear and what's next? The second layer, the one that is supposed to provide us with good insulation. There are various solutions for this and it all depends on individual preference. You can opt for a sweatshirt, a softshell or a jacket with synthetic insulation.

We advise against choosing a jacket with a natural down for skiing, as it is not suitable for physical activities. Wet down loses its thermal properties and such jackets are less able to wick away moisture. For the time being, you should wear thermal underwear on your feet, and you will find out what to wear later in this article.

Third layer - ski jacket and ski trousers with membrane

The last layer should provide protection against water and wind. This is the so-called hardshell, i.e. clothing with a waterproof and windproof membrane - a several-layer material with micropores. The micropores do not allow water droplets to pass through, but the water vapour emitted by our body freely passes through them. It is this construction that makes the jacket waterproof and breathable.

There are many membranes available on the market, the most common being Gore-Tex. The third layer is a good ski jacket and ski trousers. When choosing a ski jacket, pay attention to the aforementioned membrane, but not only. Details such as adjustable cuffs, inner cuffs, snow apron, welts or a ski pass pocket are also important. It is also advisable to choose models with an extended back section, which protects the back against wind and cold.

Ski trousers are divided into low cut, high cut and apron. High cut versions offer extra protection against the cold. Ski trousers should protect against moisture and snow penetration, which is particularly important in harsher conditions. On our feet, we often do not wear a second layer of clothing; some ski trousers are equipped with synthetic insulation to ensure thermal comfort. Other models only have a membrane, guaranteeing maximum breathability and water protection. Whatever cut or type you choose, it is worth paying attention to the details that affect functionality and comfort. They should not restrict movement. The adjustable waist allows for a perfect fit, the vents on the thighs help with ventilation during intense exertion, and the opening of the legs makes it easier to put on ski boots. In addition, snow gaiters prevent snow from getting inside, and waterproof and practical pockets allow you to store small items without any problems.

Ski accessories - what's worth buying for the slopes?

When all the layers are in place, it's time to complete the accessories, which are also an extremely important piece of equipment on the slopes. Find out what else you need to equip yourself with to ensure you are as comfortable as possible on the slopes.

Ski helmet and ski goggles

Ski goggles protect your eyes from wind, snow and also from the sun's rays, so they should contain UV filters and enable you to see very well while skiing. At S'portofino you will find ski goggles in collections from renowned brands including POC, Marker and Oakley.

Eye protection is very important, but you must not forget to protect your head as well. You should also equip yourself with a ski helmet. It is an absolute must-have for every skier and snowboarder. Not only does it protect against the consequences of falls and collisions, but it also provides thermal insulation. Modern models are lightweight, comfortable and equipped with ventilation systems to prevent overheating. Some also have integrated ear covers or the possibility of attaching goggles. Ski helmets are offered by global brands including POC, Kask and Marker.

Ski gloves

When completing your ski outfit, don't forget to protect your hands, which are exposed to low temperatures. For skiing, thicker glove models and those that consist of an inner and outer part are best. A great choice would be models with a GORE-TEX or Soft-Tex membrane for unpredictable, changeable weather. Look for the best models from brands such as Hestra, Fusalp or Rossignol. Also remember the right size of ski gloves, which should be adjusted according to individual requirements. Gloves that are too small, but also too big, will not translate into comfort when skiing downhill.

Ski socks

When skiing, put on thermal socks that are designed for winter sports. They are specially sewn and reinforced to support joint function and prevent chafing. Thanks to the use of modern materials such as merino, nylon or special synthetic fibres, ski socks provide excellent thermoregulation, keeping your feet warm but wicking away moisture to avoid the cooling sensation caused by wet feet.

Importantly, wear one pair of socks to the slopes - wearing two pairs can cause too much pressure. If you are freezing heavily, we recommend choosing taller models that will insulate your feet well. Reliable ski socks can be found in the X-Socks collection. Their models are reliable and distinguished by innovative technologies. The use of intelligent materials and precise sewing make X-Socks a choice you can rely on for every winter trip to the slopes.

Beanie

A comfortable ski hat comes in handy especially when you are moving off-piste or at rest when you take your helmet off. Remember that a helmet is absolutely essential on the slopes. On the other hand, at times when you are not skiing but, for example, entering a hut, a ski cap can come in very handy. It is advisable for it to be warm and at the same time breathable - preferably made of materials that not only protect against the cold but also wick away moisture.

Underneath the helmet, we recommend a thin ski balaclava. This provides optimum protection against the cold, but does not affect the comfort of the helmet, which should not be too tight. The balaclava adapts well to the shape of the head, so it not only keeps you warm but also helps to absorb perspiration, which is particularly important during prolonged efforts on the slopes.

Ski boots

Ski boots are an important piece of equipment for any downhill skiing enthusiast. When choosing them, it is important to consider your skills as well as your style of skiing. For beginners, models with less stiffness are recommended as they provide more comfort and make it easier to learn the technique. For more advanced skiers, stiffer boots will work well as they offer better power transfer and precision during dynamic riding. The boot stiffness scale usually starts at around 60-70 for beginners and goes up to 120 and above for professionals. Remember the right fit too - the boot should hold the foot firmly but not cause discomfort.
